This listing is for one large apothecary jar filled with hand-dug Raw Rose Blush Coloured Irish Red Ochre, from The heART of Ritual.
Hand-dug from Irish earth, this jar holds raw, rose-blush ochre in its natural form – unground, textured, alive with the land it comes from. Those working with sacred body adornment, energetic healing, or subtle anatomy will recognise immediately the depth of its presence.
Ochre has been one of the most enduring ritual colours of humanity. Across cultures and through centuries, it has been used to mark skin, bone and stone – as protective body adornment, as a colour of life-force, as a ritual companion in thresholds of birth, death and initiation. In the Celtic world, red ochre was sacred to blood rites, to womb mysteries, and to the women healers who guided cycles of life and death. It was carried onto the skin as protection, painted on bodies in ceremonies of belonging and passage, and placed in graves as a mark of reverence and continuity.
Red ochre speaks of bloodlines and the generational flow of life. It has been a colour of protection, vitality and ancestral connection – a way to honour those who came before, to strengthen boundaries, and to sanctify the body as temple. In rites of the womb, it has long been associated with the mysteries of menstruation, fertility and healing – a pigment of sovereignty and remembrance, carried by those tending the cycles of creation and release.
Unlike the finely ground ochre pigments I've offered in the past, this ochre is presented in its raw form – with lumps and texture intact. This allows you to engage with it more directly, grinding and preparing it yourself, in the way that feels most resonant with your own ritual practice. To hold and work with raw ochre is to be in dialogue with the material as it comes from the earth, shaping it into your own prayer and expression.
The potential of red ochre as a ritual tool is infinite – for body adornment, for marking thresholds, for ancestral healing, for womb rites and personal ceremonies of protection. How you choose to integrate it into your work is entirely your own – each use an echo of a practice as old as memory itself.
Ochres can be applied to the landscapes of the body, on the body of the earth (all surfaces), you can work with them to adorn sacred tools and ritual objects, they can be made into ritual paint or ink for illuminated art, creative journaling, sigil making, talismanic art, and much more.
Please note that these earth pigments are sustainably and ritually handdug. These jars are very generous in size with a significant amount of ochre contained in each. Once you have finished working with these sacred earths, these vessels can be used as spell jars, for herbs, ointments and more.
Please work with these ritual colours sensibly, knowing that they have the potential to stain clothing, textiles and surfaces! Thank you.
