A Collector’s Capsule of Solid Botanical Perfume and Functional Art Object
 
Before perfume became liquid, it lived in wax – not beeswax, but the plant’s own natural waxes, drawn slowly from fresh petals through the ancient craft of enfleurage. The Perfume Pebble follows this lineage. It holds a pure Rosa multiflora concrète: a solid botanical perfume composed solely of the rose’s own waxes and aromatic compounds. Nothing added. Nothing diluted. Nothing imposed.
 
This is a rare way of meeting rose.
 
Every flower carries a fine layer of botanical wax – a protective veil that holds its most intimate aromatic molecules. Through enfleurage, fresh petals are laid into fat and replaced daily. Over time, the plant’s waxes migrate into the medium, carrying with them the living fragrance of the blossom. From this perfumed substance, the waxes and aromatics are gently separated to create a concrète: a firm, fragrant material that is the closest perfumery has ever come to capturing the breath of a real flower.
 
This process is almost gone from the world. It cannot be mechanised or hurried. It requires day-by-day tending – gathering, renewing, waiting. For centuries it formed the foundation of temple unguents, court perfumes, and sacred aromatics across Egypt, Persia, India, and later the perfumeries of France. Today, only a handful of artisans still practice it.
 
The sage-green substance held within each Perfume Pebble is the true concreted essence of Rosa multiflora. Its own waxes. Its own resins. Its own summer fragrance preserved through slow, attentive craft. This is not a balm. It is not a beeswax base with oils added. It is the flower itself, held in its oldest form.
 
The vessel that holds it is equally deliberate. Each Perfume Pebble is formed by hand from wild clay, bone-white and tactile, textured like weathered stone. The outer surface carries the memory of earth and fire; the interior seals and protects what is most precious. These forms recall the alabaster jars of Egypt, the small stone and clay pots of ancient temples, the pomanders and unguent vessels of medieval and early modern Europe. They are vessels made to stay.
 
Solid botanical perfume does not project outward. It draws you inward. It melts only with touch, releasing a soft, green rose with notes of sun-warmed stem, meadow honey, and quiet resin. This is an intimate scent, met only in closeness. It belongs to the space between skin and breath, between presence and memory.
 
Luxury, here, is not extravagance but devotion – the hours no machine can shorten, the patience of attending to a single plant day after day, the choosing of craft over convenience. What you hold is a small ritual object, shaped by hand, holding the soul of a wild rose in winter clay.
 
Each Perfume Pebble contains approximately 5 ml of Rosa multiflora concrète, sometimes slightly more, depending on the natural form of the vessel. As each pebble is sculpted individually, no two are identical. Variation is part of the work.
 
Usage
Warm a fingertip against the surface until the botanical wax softens. Apply sparingly to wrists, throat, behind the ear, or over the heart. Solid botanical perfume stays close to the body, unfolding slowly with your own warmth. Over time, the concrète will shape itself subtly to your touch.
 
A Note on Placement
The Perfume Pebble is not designed to travel in pockets or bags. It is made to live in quiet places – beside the bed, on a small altar, in a personal space of return. It is a fragrance shared between you and the body, and if you choose, with those who come close enough to know the scent of your skin.
 
When the perfume is finished, the vessel remains. It may be kept as a small treasure holder, a devotional object, or a reminder of time spent in intimacy with rose.

THE FRAMEWORK FOR THIS COLLECTION

Our Winter/Earth Element Collection arrives into the season of Samhain – that threshold between the last new moon of the dying Celtic year in October, astronomical Samhain, and the first new moon of the year to come in November. It is here that endings and beginnings lie folded together – a dreamtime of moons that leads us into the deepest dark – asking us to walk slowly, to walk in Earth time. 

 

This is not the hurried clock-time of the everyday. It is slow time – deep time – recorded in bedrock and fault-line, in layers pressed through clay and shale. As the earth keeps her history in stone and strata, so we carry memory in bone. The land is our larger body – marrow and mountain, clay and skin, each carrying memory. To enter this season is to enter those depths, to map again the contour lines of the inner ground, to feel where the body holds fractures, pressure, weight-bearing, release. The work is slow. The work is old. Stone remembers, and so do we. Our bodies are cairns of remembrance.

Between Samhain and Solstice we are pilgrims moving through inner hollows and chambers of the soul. It is sanctuary time, a time of reverence and devotion, where prayer is not passive but visceral and embodied – where we kneel not before idols but within the tabernacle of our own being. The ember of light is entrusted to us here, and it must be guarded with care – fanned in trust, sheltered in hope, nourished with care, until it kindles to flame and warmth.

Samhain is also the season of surrender. To grieve what has passed in the twelve months gone. To honour ancestors, yes, but also to lay down the burdens of the year, the losses and thresholds crossed, the shocks and griefs that linger. As leaves return to soil, so sorrow returns to earth, darkening into humus that feeds what will come. In the body, this work is felt in the earth element – in the musculoskeletal frame, in the gut’s deep work of breaking down and letting go. To release is to create space, and to hold is to become heavy. The earth teaches us this balance, for she both receives and yields in the same breath.

 

This is the annual pilgrimage to the soul’s inner shrine – beyond one life, beyond one line of ancestry. It is the thread that connects us with stone and to soil, with grandmother and grandfather, with all who came before and all who will come after. In this time-out-of-time we reweave ourselves into that thread, into the north, into the slow, enduring rhythm of earth itself. And from that ground – from a living tapestry of blood and bone and surrender – the Solstice light is born again. A flame at the heart of winter.
