This listing is for one Hand-crafted Irish Red Ochre Watercolour Paints Collection (Seven-Piece Set), from The heART of Ritual.
Shades of Irish red ochre, each gathered from a different place, hand-dug, washed, levigated, dried, ground to a fine powder, and bound with a resin I have prepared from wild fruit tree resins. Every step has been carried out slowly, by hand, in dialogue with the land.
The result is seven watercolour paints, each one unique in tone – from rose blush to iron-rich crimson, from soft clay-red to deep earth-rust. Held in mussel shells collected along the shores of Bantry Bay, they rest as if returned to the sea, gleaming with the colour of earth made fluid.
Ochre has been used in ritual and artistry for millennia – painted on skin, traced on stone, ground into vessels, and worked into prayer. These beautiful shell paint pots carry that lineage forward. They can be used in ceremony and ritual body adornment, in painting and artistic creation, or kept simply as sacred companions – vessels of earth and sea brought together.
To look upon them is to see seven voices of Irish land – each shade holding the character of its place. To hold them is to feel the meeting of shell and ochre, sea and soil, hand and craft. They are labour-intensive to make, but in that labour lies their depth – a slow, reverent process, so that the paints you hold are more than colour: they are story, place, and offering.
Ochres can be applied to the landscapes of the body, on the body of the earth (all surfaces), you can work with them to adorn sacred tools and ritual objects, they can be made into ritual paint or ink for illuminated art, creative journaling, sigil making, talismanic art, and much more.
Once you have finished working with these sacred earths, these shell vessels can be used to create water element ritual talismans or other ritual crafts.
Please work with these ritual colours sensibly, knowing that they have the potential to stain clothing, textiles and surfaces! Thank you.
