A One Day Exploration of Ritual Rhythm and Connection between Drum, Sounder, & Self

The Heartbeat Way™ is a one-day gathering for women who have already birthed their drum and sounder on a HeARTbeat Retreat™, have crafted a drum and sounder with another facilitator, or have purchased a drum and sounder and now wish to deepen their relationship with these sacred companions.

This special event is dedicated to reconnecting to the pulse beneath our feet, the rhythms that weave us with the earth and sky, and the heartbeat that moves through drum, sounder and self.

The drum is more than a rhythm-maker, and the sounder is more than a tool. Both are spirit houses, vessels through which elemental forces move. From wood and skin, stone and sinew, they carry the breath of the land itself. They echo the primal rhythms of earth, air, fire, and water, the energies that flow through our bones, our breath, and the land beneath our feet. These sacred colleagues vibrate with their own energies, yet in the right hands, they harmonise into ritual rhythm, creating a living song of place and spirit.

In the stillness of the womb, we first heard the rhythm of the heart—the pulse of our mother, the steady beat that marks our arrival into the world. This rhythm, timeless and constant, is the foundation of all sound. The drum calls us back to this ancient beat, grounding us in the rhythm of the world. It is the heartbeat of the earth itself, the pulse of the seasons, the breath of the wind. The sounder, a voice to lift the rhythm, joins with the drum, creating a symphony of spirit and direction.

The drum, in Irish myth, is a powerful symbol of the land itself. It is a living embodiment of the Celtic medicine wheel, the wheel of the year, and the elements that guide us: earth, air, fire, and water. Each direction holds its own wisdom—the north where the earth roots us, the south where fire ignites new beginnings, the east where air brings clarity and vision, and the west where water carries us to wisdom and reflection. In the Irish cosmology, the land is alive with stories and sound, from the winds that call across the hills to the rivers that weave through the valleys. The drum is the keeper of these voices, drawing on the wisdom of place and spirit.

Through ritual rhythm, we will explore how the drum and sounder embody the teachings of the land, the cycles of the moon and sun, and the seasonal rhythms of the earth. These natural cycles—the waxing and waning of the moon, the turning of the seasons, the dance of the sun across the sky—are reflected in the drum’s pulse and the sounder’s voice. In this space, we will reconnect to these cycles, honouring our own cyclical nature, and deepen our relationship to the heartbeat of the earth.

Together, we will journey through the wheel of the year, finding our place in the unfolding cycle of time, where the rhythms of the earth mirror our own internal rhythms. We will learn how to invoke the elements, call upon the directions, and deepen our connection to the spirit of the drum and sounder.

This day is also a time of consecration and rededication. We will explore the ways to care for and nurture these sacred colleagues, ensuring they remain alive with spirit. Whether for personal reflection or professional facilitation, the drum and sounder will reveal themselves as partners on our journeys, guides to balance, healing, and transformation. Through the alchemy of sound, we will awaken their voices and deepen our relationship to them, allowing their rhythms to carry us into places of wisdom and guidance.

In this space, we will honour the interconnectedness of all things—ourselves, the land, the sun and moon, the turning seasons—and draw from the deep well of Irish myth, legend, and cosmology. Together, we will walk the sacred path of the Heartbeat Way—where the drum’s pulse is the rhythm of the earth, the sun, and the moon, and the sounder’s voice carries the wisdom of the ancients.

Bring your drum, bring your sounder. Come and deepen your relationship with these sacred colleagues, as we walk together on this journey of connection, transformation, and understanding.
