It being a Cailleach homage, of course it is an earth element offering, however the difference with this particular ritual bathing bar is that focus is placed on the swirling worlds that exist beneath the surface, what lays beneath, the unseen. As such, there is no 'overground' detail here as this ritual bathing bar need to represents the barren landscapes of outer winter, winter hibernation and going deep with our roots, and the intricate worlds that hold us and nourish us within this space as we sleep. I wanted this to look like the root system in the ground itself, to serve as a visual meditation to going within.
Similarily, I wanted this to remind us too of the layers of our skin, muscles and connective tissues so that we might come to enhance the connection with physical body (our living earth temple and home) and perhaps honour it in the way it so greatly deserves. This is the essence of embodiment.
This is represented through intricate swirls of finely ground hand gathered Irish red ochre (a sacred ritual colour for the Celts), powdered willow and mugwort charcoal (a direct reference to transitions, not least a symbolic nod to the funeral pyre by a tree that relates with emotions and a herb that is an Elder), and quartz gathered along the shores of my home in Ireland. These have been swirled through a decoction of wild native medicinal herbs and mushrooms that relate with the Earth Element, North, Winter, Ancestors, and Elder archetype, all of which were gathered in the forests and mountains around our nest.
